Soldier Stories

Fran enroute to Kuwait through Bangor….see related story in a previous post.

Soldier Stories I found this link through a posting on another blog.

Check it out. It is what one of my very first posts begged for.

Challenged the media to portray.

Wished for.

It isn’t exactly mainstream news, but someone is writing stories, and that’s a start. If you have your own story, please share it here in a comment box, or email it to me so I can post it!

Keeping Things Straight

Friday, August 18th, 2006

A carpenter friend of ours just left our house. I wanted someone to tell me if the slanted floors and sometimes sticky doors in our house were a problem. He has deduced that at some point someone did go down into the basement and stablize things so that althought at one time they were shifting, they aren’t anymore! He did say that possibly any new movement I may have noticed since we moved in 7 years ago may be attritbuted to a slight shifting of the outer walls that rest on top of ledge.
The conclusion, everything is just fine the way it is just as long as I don’t mind the slight angle that exists. In his opinion it isn’t going to change from the way it is right now. I’m happy with that!

Now to the next thing. Time to put in two new entry doors and two replacement windows. I can call the company who did the other replacement windows before we bought the place. That’s easy. The front door is a size that is no longer made. His advice is to call this place in Freeport that custom makes doors. He said I should just have them recreate this door. It has a cool handle faceplate on it that we can transfer.

Front entry door in the middle of our repainting in June.

The back door is also odd, but still commercially available via special order. Ok, time to make some phone calls.

The Days Go By

Monday, August 14th, 2006

So, it has been almost 4 months since Fran left Maine back in April.  Just about 12 months to go.  Wow…I hope time passes swiftly.  It sounds like Fran’s job is one of those that makes the time go by quickly. (See Fran’s Blog ) That’s good.

I’ve made a list of things to do.  It is hard for me to focus, so if I get into the habit of looking at a list and actually doing what is on it, maybe I’ll get things done!  Today it was catching up my account book.  Entering all my receipts into the checkbook, then into the account book, then balancing against the checking account.  I procrastinate so much on that task, but I always feel better when it is done.

I really want to curl up and read my latest book, or set up my scrapbooking desk to start on my 2005 photo album, (or on a “during deployed” album,) but alas, there will be plenty of blustery days in the coming months during which I can do those things.  In the mean time I must prepare for the school year, and finish cleaning up and getting reacquainted with the house and home after so much time away on camp trips.

Slowly the fog of change and transition will lift and we will be plowing ahead with life as semi-normal as it can get.  For now I am just trying to buckle down and create a new normal that we can live with in relative peace and calm.

Picture living here! Whoa. What a way to live! I’ve added a weather guage under the clock to the right. Ignore the time, since it doesn’t stay current. Erik and I are still looking for the perfect weather “widget” to put in that spot, but that should do for now!

Today we talked on Skype!! Very cool. There is about a 5 second delay, but I guess that is normal. I talked to a military spouse who remembers that from the years her husband was deployed overseas. So, I guess I can get used to that in order to hear his voice…for free!!!

I haven’t heard anything new from him today. The following thought came from him a couple days ago though:

“Finally got the last of our bags…..we are getting a good rep. already. Some of the camp facilities have called us to help them with PC/network issues……..”

So, as we all knew, his computer skills would not go dormant just because that is not his assigned job on this mission! Once a geek, always a geek!
