The “Business Trip” is Over
Since Fran left, I have told folks, “Oh, I’m just fine! Really, I am so accustomed to Fran going on 1 and 2 week business trips for his regular job, that this is nothing really!” Well, those two weeks have come and gone. How surreal to be punctuated by the death of one of their own. No, SSG Dale Kelly was not from Fran’s unit, but close enough. Kelly was a Maine Army National Guardman from about 30 minutes from here. His unit is on a security mission just like Fran’s. The guy was close to Fran’s age, and from reading about him in the paper, sounds an awful lot like Fran.
So, what do I say. Hmmm, what would I want someone I don’t know to say to me about my husband’s heroic death? Got me. I have no idea. There is nothing I can say to Mrs Kelly, but I can pray that her heart would be strong and courageous during the weeks, months, and years to come. She wants to encourage support for the troops. Hurray for her. She is already showing strength.
So, what can we do for her, and for those like me who still live with uncertainty? Let us talk about it. Ask us if we want to talk about it. I remember that from past sadnesses and losses. If you sincerely have a few minutes and are willing to listen, offer an ear. I have found myself wanting to talk here and there. I have had friends who have listened.
Thanks
